Southampton high volleyball off to a winning season

Both varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams at Southampton High School are off to a winning season.

On Thursday, Aug. 25, the teams opened up their season, both defeating Surry County High School in straight sets.

The Lady Indians varsity volleyball team is off to a strong start this season, having won games on Aug. 25, as well as this past Tuesday and Wednesday. They and the junior varsity teams were scheduled to face Brunswick on Thursday; then Windsor's Lady Dukes next Thursday. -- Submitted | Amy Davis

Varsity scores for the games were 25-4, 25-11 and 25-16. Standouts for the night were Emma Drake with 11 kills and six aces; Sarah Williams with four aces and three kills; and Ashlyn Edwards with 10 assists.

Junior varsity had scores of 25-10 and 25-8 that evening. The standouts for their games included Mallory Francis with two kills and four aces; Emma McClelland with five assists and Kinna Magette with 15 aces.

The varsity Lady Indians then defeated Appomattox Regional Governor’s School in straight sets on Tuesday, Aug. 30. The scores for the games were 25-2, 25-2 and 25-7.

The highlights of these games included Amani Gary with five aces; Emma Drake with eight kills; and Ashlyn Edwards with four aces and four assists.

The varsity girls then defeated Colonial Heights on Wednesday, Aug. 31, in straight sets with scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-13.

“The Lady Indians started out strong leading CHHS 20-10, and CHHS made a comeback tying the set at 20 but the Lady Indians stayed in the game and finished strong winning 25-22,” coach Amy Davis said. “The Indians dominated the remainder of the night.”

Standouts from the game included Sarah Williams with eight kills; Ashlyn Edwards with 17 assists and three aces; Jamey Bunn with 10 assists and three aces; Emma Drake with 14 kills and three digs.

“The win was an overall team effort. I am proud of the team for starting off so strong,” Davis added. “We return home next Thursday to face rivals Windsor Dukes. JV starts at 5:30.”
