BOYKINS — Marion Griffin Smith, 78, passed away on Dec. 31, 2016, in Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Marion was a native of Southampton County, and was a son of the late Forrest Olden Smith and Mary Griffin Smith, and was also predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Railey.
Marion was a graduate of Boykins High School, post-graduate of Southampton High School and a 1964 graduate of VPI & SU.
He was a former Virginia National Guardsman, a member of Cypress Cove Country Club and enjoyed playing cards with his friends, fishing and was a loyal supporter of Virginia Tech athletics.
He was the former president and co-owner of Whitley Peanut Company in Sedley Buyers and Shellers of Seed Peanuts, and a former president of the Bank of Franklin.
Marion was a member of Boykins United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Lomax Smith; two sons, Craig O. Smith (Lisa) of Hampton, and Todd B. Smith (Kristen) of Williamsburg; one brother, Kenneth I. Smith (Margaret) of Boykins; four grandchildren, Gabrielle F. Smith, Joshua O. Smith, Brett M. Smith and Bridgette B. Smith; two nieces, Sharon Cobb and Miriam Birdsong; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Dorothy Grizzard.
The memorial service will be at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Michael Baugham officiating.
The reception will follow the service at the Cypress Cove Country Club.
