The Southampton baseball team this past weekend capped an undefeated TriRivers District slate with wins over the Surry Cougars and Windsor Dukes. It marks the team’s first district title since 2013, a season in which the Indians went 15-0, 11-0 in the Southside District.

Southampton that year fell to Warhill High School in the Virginia High School League’s regional round.

In the win over Surry, Southampton’s Nash Warren tossed a complete game on the mound. He struck out seven, allowing only two hits in the 4-0 win.

“Warren was supported in the field by senior Matthew Stout, who made two big plays to get the Indians out of trouble,” head coach Wes Griffith said.

Windsor, the defending district champions, meanwhile, nearly spoiled the unblemished season. Tied at two runs apiece in the top of the seventh, however, Southampton’s James Williams earned a walk and then stole second base to get in scoring position for Warren. A single to left field plated Williams to give the Indians a 3-2 win.

“Warren was 3-for-3 on the day with two singles and a double,” Griffith said.

Up next for Southampton is the Conference 25 semifinals, with the date and opponent still to be determined.
