ISLE OF WIGHT
A trio of Isle of Wight student-athletes — swimmer Nick Schwegel and football players Bryce Casey and Zen Bristol — recently signed their letters of intent to play their respective sports in college.

Though the Chargers do not have a swimming program, Schwegel has earned a scholarship to Virginia Tech. He is a middle-distance freestyler and individual medley swimmer with Southeastern Virginia Aquatics, owning several state records in both styles.

“Swimming for Virginia Tech has been a lifelong dream of mine, and it’s surreal to believe that this is finally happening,” Schwengel said. “I can’t wait to be representing Hokie Nation in the pool and in the classroom, and I really look forward to racing at the collegiate level. I can’t thank my friends, family and support system enough for getting me this far.”

Casey, meanwhile, will continue his illustrious quarterback career at Ferrum College. The 6-foot-3-inch, two-sport athlete threw for more than 1,100 yards and 18 touchdowns while leading the Chargers in 2015 to their first Virginia Independent School Athletic Association state championship since 2007.

Without Bristol protecting Casey’s blind side, Isle of Wight may not have had the successes it achieved last season. He’ll be attending The Apprentice School in Newport News, where he’ll have a chance to anchor the offensive line for the next four years.
