Southampton County Public School Superintendent Dr. Alvera J. Parrish on Wednesday revealed that a small occurred at the middle school on April 21.

“A student set fire to a small piece of paper in a trash can in the restroom,” Parrish said. “There were no students or staff harmed, as it was contained in the trash can.”

Letters were sent home that same day to inform parents of the incident.

“We are continuing to investigate the situation, and will implement appropriate disciplinary action according to procedure,” Parrish said.

This marks the second time this month that a student has started a fire in one of the district’s bathrooms, as a 17-year-old was detained on April 5 for doing so at the high school. That student was charged with arson of an occupied public building.
