Rock Church Academy’s second-year soccer team improved to 2-0 with impressive victories over Fuqua and Surry last week.

“We are a young and small team with a number of sixth and seventh graders, so when we can pull out a victory over these bigger teams, it means a lot,” said head coach Danny Dillon. “The future is bright.”

The Lions briefly trailed in the first few minutes of the match against Fuqua, but goals by brothers D.J. and Jack Dillon gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.

Rock Church scored six unanswered goals and goalkeeper Joshua Russo held the Falcons scoreless for the final 30 minutes to give the Lions a 6-1 win

The Lions returned to the pitch two days later as it played host to Surry and quickly raced out to a 4-0 lead.

“[We were] excited about taking the field on our new soccer complex,” Dillon said.

The Cougars netted a goal after the half, but Rock Church’s Tre Turner responded with a goal of his own to put the game out of reach, 5-1.

“I heard the Surry coach telling his kids to watch how our kids passed, moved and played,” Dillon said. “It was a tremendous compliment hearing the opposing coach use our team to teach the game of soccer. We are not the best by any means, but we try to get the best our of each player.”
