Mason, who is homeschooled, is the son of Robin and Kathy Mason of Southampton County.

Mason has played competitive tennis tournaments since age 10.

He has climbed up the Mid-Atlantic rankings, and has been ranked as high as No. 17.

He is currently the 18th-ranked boy’s tennis recruit in Virginia by tennisrecruiting.net.

Mason recently won the United States Tennis Association Mid-Atlantic Challenger Boys Doubles Tournament in Richmond, as well as the Debordieu Boys Singles Championships in Georgetown, South Carolina.

He finished as runner-up in the USTA Virginia State Boys Hard Court Championships in Richmond.

“It’s taken me years of hard work to get where I am today with tennis,” Mason said. “Without the help of my coach of seven years, Ken Cussick, who taught me so much about the game, my tennis would be nowhere near the level it is now.

“Also thanks for the constant support of my parents, who have funded my tennis as well as have driven me to tournaments and practices across the Mid-Atlantic Region. I am really excited about playing for Christopher Newport this fall!”

The Christopher Newport Captains men’s tennis team is a NCAA Division III powerhouse — ranked No. 20 in the most recent national polls.
