COURTLAND
The Windsor girls basketball team is young this year, but they are working hard to be as good as they were last season, according to coach Sherry Ashburn.

“We had a great season last year, I’m hoping to do the same this year,” Ashburn said.

The Lady Dukes finished the year with a 10-9 overall record and No. 2 seed in the Conference 33 Tournament.

The season ended with a loss in the Virginia High School League Division 2A Regional playoffs.

The girls are giving it their all and trying their best to improve at practice and during each game.

“We are putting in hard work and trying to step up our game,” Ashburn continued. “As long as they give me 100 percent and work hard in practice, that’s all I can ask for.”

The team fell to Sussex Central and Southampton to open the 2015-16 campaign, but bounced back when they played Franklin on Wednesday night.

Ashburn also said that she has a number of different high scorers and strong players on the team this year.

She is hoping they will help carry them to another winning season.

“I’m just looking forward to having a great season with these young ladies — they want to win as much as I do,” Asburn said prior to last year.

That sentiment remains the same this season.

Numbers to Know

5 – The Dukes must replace five graduated seniors from last year’s squad, four of which were starters for the 10-win Dukes. “I’m rebuilding my team this year, but I still feel we will have a great season,” Ashburn said.

12 – Ashburn said that all 12 of the girls on the team show a lot of promise and potential. “They are all coachable and get along with each other,” the second-year head coach said. “They work well as a team.”

Cast of Characters

Kayce Gray – Freshman guard Kayce Gray has already been a bright spot for the Dukes this season. “She’s focused,” Asburn said. “She transferred in and has shown a lot of athleticism. She’s very coachable.” Gray has been leading scorer in each of Windsor’s games thus far. She scored 26 points against Southampton and 15 points against Franklin.

Andrea Magba – Junior Andrea Magba is one of the leading scorers for the team. This is her third season as Lady Duke basketball player, and Ashburn has high expectations for her. “She works hard under the board and she my strong center,” Ashburn said. “She has a positive attitude and is always willing to learn. “ Magba scored 13 points against Southampton and 11 points against Franklin.
