COURTLAND
Southampton girls basketball head coach Littleton Parker is expecting a better season than last year as this year’s team is older.

At the beginning of the season last year he said, “We’re a very young team. We just have to take it one game at a time and make sure we’re prepared.”

Throughout the season last year, the team was able to gain experience as a unit, as most of the team was freshmen and sophomores.

“We worked hard to improve from last season,” Parker said. “We have a lot of experience back.”

The Lady Indians have proved their hard work by winning two games this season and only losing one so far.

They lost to Charles City last Thursday night in a home game with a final score of 32-27. However, they made a comeback against Franklin on Saturday night with a final score of 44-31. They won again on Monday night when they played Windsor with a score of 52-48.

“Everybody has been playing hard. I want to compliment that. We’re doing what we have to do,” Parker said.

Numbers to Know

2 – This is Parker’s second year as the coach at Southampton. He and the Indians are hoping to improve from last year’s record of 6-14. They have been working hard together to ensure they will have a better season.

9 – The team has nine upperclassman this year – four juniors and five seniors – compared to last year when the majority of the team was underclassman. Most of the team played together last year, which they are hoping will give them an advantage this season.

Cast of Characters

Bryona Knight Although Parker stated, “I don’t think we have any one individual that you say carries the team,” it can be argued that Bryona Knight is one of the star players. He said before last season that the Lady Indians will go as far as the junior point guard takes them. Knight scored 14 points in the game against Franklin and 16 points against Windsor.

Ja’maya Hunt – A player to watch this year is underclassman Ja’maya Hunt. The sophomore was one of the leading scorers in the Windsor game with 15 points. She has notched a bucket in all three games this season.
