Southampton records triple victory this week

COURTLAND
Southampton varsity and junior varsity volleyball defeated Windsor on Tuesday night in their “Dig Pink” game, earning each team another win while exceeding their goal of raising over $1,000 to donate to breast cancer research.

Varsity had scores of 25-17, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-13.

“The Indians came out with a commanding lead and played hard to beat the Dukes 25-13 in the final set,” said coach Amy Davis.

Stats from the game included Courtney Vinson with three aces and 24 assists; Jenna Billups with five kills and five digs; Emma Drake with eight aces, 13 kills and five digs; Sarah Williams with two aces, 13 kills and three digs; Morgan Bunn with nine kills; and Madison Wright with 10 digs.

Junior varsity also won their game with scores of 25-17 and 25-13.

Highlights from this game included Ashlyn Edwards with five aces and nine assists; Madeline Burgess with five kills; and Jamey Bunn with three aces and one kill.

Junior Sarah Williams said, “We pulled together and worked great as a team. Even though we had our low mental, we laid it all on the court and came out with the win and that’s what I love about our team.”

Sophomore Emma Drake added, “Last night we came together when we needed each other the most. Having all the positive energy in the gym makes you want to play harder and we definitely did that. During the game we achieved a goal we wanted to do all year, and that was to come together for every point and cheer each other on.”

During the games, varsity and junior varsity also competed against each other to see who could raise the money to donate to the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundations. The teams took donations and many of the members played in honor or memory of a family member or friend battling breast cancer.

According to Davis money is still coming in, but the total as of Wednesday evening was $660 raised by varsity and $324 raised by junior varsity.An additional $198 was raised at the game from a raffle with gifts donated by Donna Rountree and The Peanut Patch. The total amount so far is $1,941.

Varsity played on Wednesday night as well against Appomattox Regional Governor’s School earning them another win.

Final scores for this game were 25-15, 25-11 and 25-12.

The highlights for the game included Courtney Vinson with 12 assists and two aces; Jenna Billups with three aces and four kills; Emma Drake with seven kills and one block; Peyton Bunn with three aces, two kills and two digs; Erin Rountree with five kills; Danielle Moore with 10 assists; and Ann Jackson Edwards with one ace and three digs.

Davis said, “It was a great game. We were able to get some girls in some different positions and give everyone an opportunity to show what they can do. These girls are working so hard and playing so well as a team right now I’m hoping it continues to allow us to extend our season. I’m so proud of all they are accomplishing and the support they give each other.”
