LAWRENCEVILLE
Southampton Academy’s baseball team has won the Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship for the third-consecutive year.

The Raiders received a bye in the quarterfinals by finishing first for the regular season at 9-0 in the conference. In the semi-final game, played at Lawrenceville on Brunswick Academy’s Field, Southampton matched up with No. 5 Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot Knights. The Raiders won this game 8-0. Southampton scored three runs in the second inning, two runs in the third, two in the fourth and one run in the fifth inning. Jackson Smith held the opponents at bay, allowing only four hits in the five innings that he was on the mound. Brooks Holland relieved for the sixth and seventh innings, allowing no runs to cross the plate. The Raiders finished with eight runs on eight hits and no errors to move on to the championship game.

In Saturday’s championship game, the Raiders defeated the Warriors of Tidewater Academy, 10-0. Southampton opened the game scoring six runs in the first inning. This gave Brynner Porter all the support he would need on the mound. Porter had one of his best outings of the season running his record to 7-0. He gave up four hits and struck out nine in a complete game-shutout. The Raiders complimented Porter’s performance with timely hitting and some strong defensive plays.

SA will move on to the VISAA State Division III Quarterfinals ranked No. 1, and will host Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot at home today at 4 p.m.
