The Southampton Academy softball team scored five runs in the first inning, and it was enough to win Thursday’s matchup with Isle of Wight, 5-3.

The Lady Indians were led by sophomores Allison Matthews and Megan Vincent, who plated two runs apiece; sophomore Mason Pope also had an RBI. Matthews and senior August Ringer led the team with two hits each on the afternoon.

Pitcher Brooke Mizelle continued her excellent senior campaign with another complete-game win, her 11th of the season.

The Lady Chargers were able to string consecutive hits off of Mizelle in the third, fourth and sixth innings, but could not get any closer in defeat.

Southampton Academy (14-2) will next visit Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, on Monday, April 27, to play Halifax Academy. Isle of Wight will travel to Portsmouth that same evening to play Alliance Christian Academy. Both games are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
