Isle of Wight Academy’s varsity baseball team fell to 1-1 on the young season after a 2-0 defeat March 15 against Grace Christian in a pitcher’s duel in Mechanicsville, Va.

Grace Christian started the scoring in the first inning after two outs were recorded by strikeout. Two walks and a single, which nearly resulted in an inning-ending force at second, instead resulted in a run scored. A subsequent single also resulted in another Kings run to make the score 2-0.

Grace’s Jordan Lucy pitched four innings, allowing one hit and struck out seven chargers while walking five. IWA starter Jake Wells pitched three innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs, striking out seven and walking four.

IWA opened its season with a 5-3 win at Broadwater Academy in Exmore on March 8

The Chargers are led by freshman catcher Drake Williams and his .500 average and a .667 slugging percentage.

IWA’s softball team opened its season on March 8 with a 1-2 mark with a win vs. Broadwater, dropping contests to Western Branch 12-0 and Hickory 14-1.

Kate Holland and Jenna Willette lead Charger hitters with .375 averages; Willette has a team-high 1.000 on-base percentage/slugging. Nora Pye leads IWA pitchers, tossing 12 innings with a 1-1 record.

IWA athletes last week signed letters of intent to continue their athletic pursuits in college.

Reese Upton will play softball at Salem College; Kaitlyn Springle, softball at Bluefield University; Ashton Rogers, baseball at Paul D. Camp Community College; Wade Whitley, football at Averett University.
