IWA sports: Volleyball closes season with win

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Isle of Wight Academy’s varsity girls volleyball team defeated Hampton Christian Academy 3-1 on Thursday, Oct. 19, to wrap up a 6-12 season.

The Lady Chargers fell to local powerhouse Nansemond River High School 3-0 on Monday, Oct. 16.

CROSS COUNTRY

Five IWA runners qualified for the junior varsity state meet Saturday, Oct. 21, at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville. Joe Phillips, Luke Lemasters-Stover, Hunter Levelle, Ella Huber and Hannah Whitley competed in the race.

IWA varsity runner John Butler won the all age event at the 2023 Smithfield Hog Jog. Butler ran the 3.1-mile course in 18:17, besting a field of 286 competitors.

Team IWA finished third in the event.

The IWA cross country team will compete in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Cross Country State Championships on Thursday, Nov. 9, at Woodberry Forest.

FOOTBALL

IWA’s varsity football team traveled to Charlottesville Friday, Oct. 27, and was defeated 49-0 by St. Anne’s-Belfield School to fall to 1-6 on the season.

The 6-2 Falcons are the No. 4 team in VISAA Division II football and are likely playoff contenders.

The Chargers host Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy on Friday, Nov. 3, in their final home game of the 2023 season. The team will honor its senior class in pregame ceremonies. Game time is 7 p.m. at William Hooper Field.
