On Thursday, Southampton Academy’s Brooke Mizelle and Brunswick Academy’s Elise Walton had an outright duel on the mound.

The Lady Raiders’ August Ringer was able to give her teammate the advantage in the bottom of the first, when she reached base and scored on an error. After that, there wasn’t much going on offensively, as Mizelle cruised to a complete game shutout with some help from the defense. She struck out five over seven innings of work.

Just two days before, it was the offense that shined, as the Lady Raiders knocked in 12 runs on 15 hits. They only gave up four hits to the Lady Saints of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. Thanks to some errors, the Saints hung around and closed it to 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth before Southampton added five more over the top of the next two innings.

Kelly Ferguson, Matthews and Mizelle each had three-hit days, as the freshman, Ferguson, knocked in five of the runs. Matthews had an RBI.

Mizelle also completed that the game on the hill. She had five strikeouts to show for it.

The Lady Raiders (7-2) will play against Northeast Academy of Lasker, North Carolina, in the Hobgood Academy Tournament in Hobgood, North Carolina. The game is on April 10 and first pitch is at 4 p.m.
