One year after winning the Virginia Commonwealth Conference, the Southampton Academy co-ed soccer team has been tasked with replacing eight seniors. Repeating as champions may be too tall of a task for head coach Jamie Weist’s young squad, though, as they’ve started the season 1-3.

The season opened with a 4-0 home loss to Isle of Wight Academy in a rematch of last year’s conference championship game. The Raiders then traveled to Powhatan to play Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, falling 7-1. The team’s only goal game on a successful penalty kick from junior Seth Edwards.

Sophomore Emery Weist, the coach’s son, scored a hat trick in the Raiders lone triumph of the season, a 4-0 win over Kenston Forest. Eight grader Noah Shaffer also added his first career goal. Most recently, the Raiders fell to Greenbrier Christian on the pitch, 8-0.

The team returns to action at Brunswick Academy on April 14. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m.
