LAWRENCEVILLE
In the top of the seventh, Southampton Academy was facing extra innings when Avery Pope stepped up to the plate with runners on first and third. The Lady Raiders softball team was all squared up with the Lady Vikings of Brunswick Academy, 1-1.

There were no outs, so something hit deep to the outfield could have decided the game if pitcher Brooke Mizelle gave them another scoreless inning. However, Pope, the eighth grader, hit a game-winning triple to make the score 3-1. Ashten Hinkle followed that up with an inside-the-park homerun to give the visiting team a 5-1 edge going into the bottom of the final inning.

Mizelle came out and pitched a no-hit inning to seal the deal. The senior had five strikeouts and gave up two hits, both of them in the fourth inning when the Lady Vikings scored their lone run on a Courtney Ann Walton single.

The Lady Raiders first run came in the first inning, with August Ringing scoring after a walk on a single from Mason Pope.

Hinkle had a two-hit day including the inside-the-park homerun.

The Lady Raiders are 1-2 on the season, and they will host Greenbrier Christian Academy today at 4:30 p.m.
