In February, Tidewater Academy wrapped up its 2014-15 Varsity girls and boys basketball seasons with both teams participating in the Virginia Colonial Conference Tournament, and the Varsity boys team reaching the Division III Quarterfinals of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Tournament. The VCC Tournament was at Richard Bland College and the VISAA Tournament was at Virginia State University.
Always a shining example of sportsmanship, spirit, and teamwork, the varsity Lady Warriors fought hard all season, holding their own within a conference of larger and more experienced teams. The school was only able to field a JV team in 2013-14. This year’s team was coached by Emily Pittman. Two Tidewater athletes from the Lady Warriors team were honored by the Virginia Colonial Conference for their performance during the 2014-15 basketball season. Senior Taylor Pruitt of Wakefield was named to the VCC First-Team All-Conference, and Senior Dana Clements of Spring Grove received one of the conference’s all academic award.
Tidewater’s varsity boys team, coached by Walter Westbrook, ended its season with an overall record of 21-6. The team finished runner-up in February’s VCC Tournament and also earned regular season runner-up for the conference’s 2014-15 basketball season.
Several Tidewater athletes from the varsity boys team were honored by the VCC for their performance during the season. Senior Elante Drew of Smithfield was awarded VCC Player of the Year. Drew, along with seniors Payton Holdsworth of Wakefield and Marty Gura of Waverly, were named to the VCC First-Team All-Conference. Ninth grader Jaylin Stewart of South Chesterfield was named to the VCC Second-Team All-Conference. Senior Benji Goodrich of Wakefield received the conference’s all-academic award. Named to the VCC All-Tournament Team were Elante Drew and Jaylin Stewart.
