With DayShawn Wells leading the way for the Bulldogs with 13 points, Bowie State out-rebounded the Hawks 47-36 and shot 46.9 percent from the floor over the course of the game.

“I’m proud of our team,” Bowie State head coach Darrell Brooks said. “We rebounded really well tonight and I think that was the key to this win.”

Chowan was only able to muster a 34.8 percent from the floor in the loss, with Kyree Bethel and Mark Anthony Buright leading the way with 13 points.

“Obviously they played well,” Chowan head coach Brett Vincent added. “They have a great basketball team.

“Bowie State was good early and we had to fight uphill the rest of the way. They were the better team tonight.”

This quarterfinal loss came after a first round win in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament — as the CIAA Northern Division No. 4 Hawks netted a 65-60 victory against the conference’s Southern Division No. 5 St. Augustine’s Falcons.

Carlos Arroyo led all players in the contest with 18 points in the victory. Kyree Bethel added 15 points for the Hawks while Mark Anthony Buright chipped in 14 points. Meanwhile, Bethel also took control of Chowan’s single season 3-point record with 85 from beyond the arch on the year.

The contest featured seven lead changes and four tied scores. The Hawks’ bench players accounted for 22 of the team’s points. Chowan shot 38.5 percent from the floor while Saint Augustine’s got 33.3 percent to drop over the course of the evening.

On Wednesday evening, coach Vincent was proud of his team.

“This is a big win for our team and for the university,” he said. “We’ve lost some very close games this season, and I think that helped prepare us for the tournament.”
