Even though Friday’s match against the Surry High School Lady Cougars didn’t end the way Windsor High School head coach Sherry Ashburn would have liked, she saw a lot of heart in the 66-64 TriRivers basketball loss.

The Dukes entered the second half down 30-17, and they fought hard, surging to score 47 points. The Dukes outscored the Cougars by 11, but the 36 points Surry scored was enough, thanks to the first half effort.

“The Lady Dukes never gave up,” Ashburn said. “They were playing hard and fighting to the end, only to go down by a bucket. As a coach, I couldn’t be any prouder of this team. I have a group of wonderful young ladies who work together to make things happen.”

Leading the Dukes was Bridgette Walton, who had 25 points, six rebounds and two assists. She was also dangerous on the line, hitting 13-of-16.

Vonquisha Turner and Jazzmine Bynum contributed in the loss as well, knocking down 14 points and 11 points, respectively.

The Dukes, now 8-5, will visit the Greensville Lady Eagles for a TriRivers match.
