PETERSBURG
The Chowan University Hawks traveled to the campus of the Virginia State University Trojans only to meet defeat once again, bringing their overall record to 1-9 for the 2014 school year.

The Trojans racked up a total of 40 points compared to the Hawks’ 7 in a game dominated by the Trojans. The lone touchdown for the Hawks came with 12:19 left in the fourth quarter, when Ryan Nolan connected with Dexter Green for a 57-yard touchdown pass in the middle of the field, which was followed by a successful extra point kick by Nick Hahula.

The Trojans, now 8-2 overall, showed their strength during this matchup accumulating 29 first downs compared to Chowan’s 14 and amassing 322 yards rushing and 205 yards in the air compared to Chowan’s 139 yards rushing and 165 yards in the air.

VSU also dominated the clock keeping possession of the ball 37:52 compared to CU’s 22:08.

The VSU Trojans also forced three turnovers by Chowan with two being interceptions for a total of 57 yards and one touchdown and one fumble recovery resulting in 27 yards.

At the beginning of the game, it appeared Chowan may be evenly matched as their defense held the Trojans and forced a punt. On Chowan’s first possession, they drove the ball from their own 37-yard line to the 1-yard line of VSU, but could not capitalize on this and did not put points on the board. It would be like this for the rest of the day as VSU took the lead on the next possession and never looked back.

Leading the rushing for Chowan was Ryan Nolan, who rushed it 18 times for 106 yards, followed by J.R. Williams, who was 11 for 20. Receiving yards was led by Dexter Green who snagged 3 passes for 66 yards and is also credited with a 57-yard touchdown. This was followed by Antjuan Randall, who caught 3 for 57 yards. Ryan Nolan was credited with 11 completions for 27 attempts, 2 interceptions and 1 touchdown pass, while Damian Ellis was 0 for 1.

This coming Saturday will be the final regular season game for the Chowan University Hawks, as they play host to Lincoln University in the “Hall of Fame” game.

Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Garrison Stadium on the Chowan University campus in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.
