Local tennis league volleys into second season

FRANKLIN—The second season of the Western Tidewater Tennis Association Tri-Level League has begun at Cypress Cove Country Club. The league features four teams that field doubles teams at the A-Advanced, B-Intermediate and C-Beginner levels. Matches are played on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.

Players are from Franklin, Southampton County, Isle of Wight County, Windsor and Suffolk. In the opening night of action, Love Stinks defeated The Real Winners 3-0 and Giving Free Lessons defeated Strung Out 2-1.

Results from the Love Stinks and The Real Winners match was, at the A level, the team of Andy Mason and Mark Evans defeating the team of Allen Harper and Tommy Harrell in the first set 6-2, losing 4-6 in the second set and coming away with a 10-3 win in the tie-breaker.

Lauren Harper and Carrie Beale beat Tina Evans and Marena Vick in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at the B level.

The C level team of Diane Vick and Connie Williams defeated Meghan Councill and Sharon Whitley in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

Sheryl Raulston and Gillette Councill of Strung Out started the match off right for their team at the A level, defeating Jack Schwolow and Steve Stewart 6-4 in the first set, losing the second set 6-7(5), and winning in the tie-breaker 10-7.

At the B level, Giving Free Lessons came back, as Maddie Niles and Crystal Butler defeated Kathy Mason and Maggie Evans in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

Willie Schools and Dana Carr sealed the win for Giving Free Lessons, defeating Diann Cooper and Lori Cogsdale in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
