Fenner moves on to 3A state track championship

COURTLAND—After strong conference and regional performances, Southampton High School track star Devine Fenner will move on to the 3A State Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Harrisonburg this weekend.

This after competing at the 3A East outdoor track and field championships at Culpeper High School on May 28, and the Conference 25 tournament at New Kent High School on May 19.

Marqi Eaton also advanced to the East championships after a strong performance at the conference championships.

On May 19, at the conference championships, Fenner placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23 seconds, and also in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 50.42. Both are meet records. He placed third in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet and 6 inches.

At the same event, Eaton finished 4th in the shot put, with a throw of 39 feet and 7 inches.

This was good enough to move both track and field athletes on to the East championships.

There, Fenner placed first in the long jump with a distance of 22 feet and 8.25 inches, which was a meet record. He followed that up with two second place finishes in the 200, with a time of 22.24 seconds, and in the 400 dash, with a time of 50.08 seconds, both personal bests. He finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.10 seconds.

Eaton finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet and 2 inches, a personal best.

Fenner earned the right to compete in the 3A State Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Harrisonburg High School in Harrisonburg on June 6-7. He will compete in the 100, 200 and 400, and also in the long jump.
