COURTLAND—Coming off a 3-0 loss in the VCC Softball Championship Game in Powhatan, the Lady Raiders of Southampton Academy rebounded and defeated Amelia Academy 10-0 at home in 6 innings on Tuesday evening.

That was enough to advance them from the quarterfinals in the VISAA Tournament, to the semi-finals, where they will face Broadwater Academy at the Dinwiddie Sports Complex in Southerland. Coach Jeb Bradshaw said Broadwater always has a good team.

“We have got to be on our A game to beat them,” he said. “They’ve got good pitching and good hitting.”

Bradshaw said that Broadwater is in a different conference, so they have not seen them since this past season. They will face-off on Thursday at 1 p.m.

This week, it’s just about brushing up on the basics in practice.

“We’ve just got to work on our hitting skills some more, and our fielding,” he said. “We’ll take more time doing fielding in practice.”

As far as Tuesday’s big win, Bradshaw said his team just did a good job hitting the ball and moving the runners. Brook Mizelle also had another solid outing on the mound, giving up 3 hits and striking out 6 in 6 innings.

At the plate, she drove in 2 of the 10 runs, batting 2-for-3. Ashten Hinkle and August Ringer also had 2-hit days.
