The Southampton Indians (4-3) fell to the Brunswick Bulldogs 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite a good pitching performance from Senior Hayden Spalding, the Indians could not overcome some bad defense, late walks and a poor offensive performance.

The Indians struck first in the bottom of the first when Spalding hit a two-out towering fly ball over the left-field fence. The Bulldogs came right back tying the game at one with a leadoff single, stolen base and single to right field. In the bottom of the second, Southampton was able to scrape one across when Junior Brandon Sprinkle drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a passed ball. Sprinkle reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Junior Brian Craft and reached third on a groundball out to the right side of the infield by Junior Brandon Raiford.

Brunswick would put up the largest inning of the day in the top of the fourth. The Bulldogs were able to get three runs on two one-out hits and a passed ball. Following the hits, the Indians second baseman committed a throwing error on top of a fielding error to allow two runners to score. With the score at 4-2, the Indians were able to cut it to a one run lead in the bottom of the fifth when Senior Brandon Knight was able to score sophomore James Williams on a double down the left field line.

Brunswick pulled ahead 5-3 in the top of the sixth with a walk, stolen base and sacrifice bunt down the first base line.

Southampton was able to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth with Junior Brian Craft and Junior Hunter Peck scoring after reaching on a hit by pitch and error. Junior reliever Alex Jones was not able to hold the Bulldogs down, however, as Brunswick drew two two-out walks and had a timely single up the middle to score the last two runners of the game.

The Bulldogs outhit hit Southampton 8 to 3, while Southampton committed two errors and Brunswick committed three.
