COLONIAL HEIGHTS—Virginia Commonwealth University commit Tanner Winters toed the mound for the first time this season, as the Indians of Southampton faced the Patriots of Colonial Heights High School Monday. The Indians came away with a 3-2 win.

The Indians jumped ahead early in the game as Freshman right fielder Nash Warren plated Hunter Peck and Dylan Beale with a two-out single to shallow center field. The Patriots were able to score one in the second on a single, walk and double to left centerfield. The Patriots also scored one in the third after a lead off walk was able to score on another double to the left centerfield fence. The game was knotted up at two until the top of the fifth inning when Navy commit Hayden Spalding was able to score on Senior Josh Lowe’s infield hit, which went by the pitcher’s mound. Lowe’s hit proved to be the game winning RBI, as Peck did not allow a Patriot hit the last four innings of the game. The Southampton battery of Winters and Peck were able to strike out nine Patriot batters and only allow three hits and three walks.

The Indians were able to gain seven hits and three walks, while committing one error in the field.

Winters was 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and double. Spalding, Jack Bunn, and Austin Pierce also had hits on the day.

Southampton is currently 1-0 and the Patriots are now 1-1.
