GREENSVILLE—The Southampton Indians opened the season with a 1-0 win against Greensville.

“We played really well, controlling much of the possession of the ball during the match,” said Head Coach Scott Edwards. “We also out-shot them 20 to 3. With only one of their shots causing any concern for our keeper.”

Tenth-grade midfielder Kendall Butler scored the game’s only goal on a penalty kick late in the second half. Goal keeper Brian Cooke had all three saves.

“The team I have this year should have a very good season in the Tri-Rivers District,” said Edwards. “We finished third last year in the Southside District behind Prince Edward and Park View. I have returned eight out of the 11 starters from last year. With the players I have this year, I have changed our system to create more attacking play.”

Top returners include Kevin Watford, senior, Roberto Volanos, senior, Enoch Westover, junior, Brian Cooke, junior, Kenny Le, senior, Michael Le, junior, Kendall Butler, sophomore, and Gavin Thompson, junior.
