COLONIAL HEIGHTS—The Southampton Lady Indians ended their season with a loss to Warhill High School. After defeating York in the first round of the conference tournament, the team traveled to Colonial Heights to take on Warhill, where they lost in straight sets.
“We never really got going,” said head coach Chad Brock. “Warhill is a strong team, and we got down early in the first set on serve receive, something we had been good at all year. After that it was difficult to get any offense going.”
Warhill went on to defeat Lafayette in the final and both teams advanced to the regional tournament.
“Either one of those two teams has a shot at winning the state,” said Brock.
Southampton had several girls that have received post season recognition. For the all district team the Lady Indians placed 4 on the first team: Lindsey Harrup, Madeleine Kahle, Grayson Drake and Kaylee Edwards were all voted to the first team. Samantha Billups, Jenna Billups, Eve Robertson and Megan Duck were also placed on the all district team.
Eleven of the girls were recognized for their academic achievement meaning that they had accumulative GPAs of 3.2 or higher. Samantha Billups, Peyton Bunn, Jenna Billups, Nadia Purvis, Eve Robertson, Zoe Schools, Megan Duck, Kaylee Edwards, Madeleine Kahle, Lindsey Harrup and Grayson Drake all received this honor. The outgoing seniors on this years team have an average GPA of 4.1.
“I think that speaks very highly of these girls level of dedication to their school work and athletics,” said Brock. “To maintain their GPA and be a winning team they put in a lot of late nights studying. These girls are not taking basic classes. They are enrolled in AP and dual credit classes. The graduating seniors have averaged 20 wins every season they have been here.”
For the all-conference team Madeleine Kahle, Kaylee Edwards, and Grayson Drake made the second team and Lindsey Harrup was honorable mention.
