The Chowan University Hawks fell short this past Saturday when they hosted the Virginia State Trojans.

The Hawks were able to fend off the Trojans during the first scoreless quarter. However, the Hawks couldn’t hold the Trojans out of the endzone forever and the Trojans broke into the endzone with a 15 yard rush by Jordan Anderson with 5:10 left in the second quarter. With a good extra point kick by Shawn Hunt, the Hawks now trailed 7-0 that score would hold until the end of the half.

The Trojans seemed to come alive in the second half and dominated the Hawks. With 9:21 left in the 3rd quarter, Jordan Anderson crossed over into the endzone with a 1 yard dash topped off with another good extra point kick by Shawn Hunt extending their lead to 14-0. With 5:13 left in the 3rd quarter, Devonte Piggott intercepted a pass from Ryan Simpson on the Chowan 8-yard line and ran in it for another Trojan touchdown. Shawn Hunt kicked the extra point and the Trojans went up

21-0. With 52 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, Jordan Anderson took off and never looked back as he went all the way for a 73-yard touchdown run. Shawn Hunt again put the extra point kick through the uprights extending the lead to 28-0.

The one big defensive hold was just in the 4th quarter when Chowan held off the Trojans, who had marched from their own 34-yard line down to the 2-yard line and were first and goal. They were successful in gaining 1 yard, but could not penetrate the endzone as the Chowan Hawks held fast and took over on their own 1-yard line on turn over by downs. Neither team was able to put points on the board during the 4th quarter and the game ended 28-0 in favor of the Trojans.

Virginia State led in total yards rushing with 290 compared to Chowan’s 87. However, Chowan racked up 276 passing yards compared to Virginia State’s 56 yards.

DaSean Martin led Chowan in rushing with 66 yards followed by Ryan Simpson with 56 yards. Simpson was 26 for 44 with 1 interception. Robert Holland led in receiving yards with 123 yards followed by Antjuan Randall with 64, JR Williams with 43 and Damian Ellis with 20. Chowan will travel this coming Saturday for their final regular season game to take on the Lincoln University Lions in Lincoln, Pa.
