Franklin tennis star ranked sixth in nation

FREDERICKSBURG—Lindsay Raulston of Franklin, a junior at University of Mary Washington, was just announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as being the #6 ranked tennis player in singles in Division III in the nation and #10 ranked doubles team in the nation.

This qualifies her to be named an All-American in singles (second year in a row) and an All-American in doubles (first time). Raulston finished the year 2013 with the highest national singles ranking of any player ever at UMW. Last year, she finished the year ranked #19 in the nation in singles.
In singles this year, Raulston was ranked #2 in the Atlantic South Region. She played #1 singles for UMW, where she finished the year with a record of 20-4, beating six All-Americans during the year. She was named the Atlantic South Region “Player to Watch” in singles at the NCAA national player’s championships. She was invited to the play in the NCAA national singles championships this year in Kalamazoo where the top 32 in the nation square off to play. She won her first round against an opponent from Oberlin College 7-6, 6-1, and lost in the round of 16 in an epic three-set match to an opponent from Middlebury College (1-6, 7-6, 1-0). She fought back from 1-6, 2-5 to push the match to a third set tiebreaker.
Raulston was also named as the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, and was named to the First Team Conference singles and doubles teams.
In doubles, she was ranked #4 in the Atlantic South Region. Her doubles partner is Shelby Harris, a freshman from Newport News. They played #1 doubles for UMW and finished the year with a record of 16-4 as a team.
Raulston helped lead the UMW women’s team to a year ending team ranking of #20 in the nation, their highest level in the past four years.
Lindsay is from Franklin and is the daughter of Hugh and Sheryl Raulston. She credits local tennis pro Ken Cussick for development of her solid groundstrokes and her strong serve.
Academically, she continues to be on the Dean’s List at UMW, and currently has a 3.7 GPA. She is a Biology Major with a Pre-Med focus, and plans on attending medical school. This spring, she was awarded the Chi Beta Phi Science Honor Society scholarship from UMW for a rising senior in the Biology program.
