Courtland—The Southampton Indians remained unbeaten thanks to a come-from-behind, extra-inning win in Monday’s first round of the Region I baseball tournament. The Indians (16-0) defeated the Lafayette Rams of the Bay Rivers District 5-4 in nine innings.

The Indians started off slowly as they went down 1-0 in the top of the second. The Rams drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, and scored on a single to right centerfield. The Rams built their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third. Lafayette Rams scored their second run when they forced a two out error, stole second base, and scored on a single to left field.

The Indians got their bats going in the bottom of the third when senior Cecil Lowe drove a line drive to left field. Sophomore Dylan Beale, who ran for Lowe, moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Hunter Peck drove in Beale with a base hit up the middle to pull within one. Junior Hayden Spalding hit safely with a soft line drive to right center. The Rams outfielder committed an error and Peck and Spalding moved to second and third. Senior Jake Pope was able to drive in both Peck and Spalding with a line drive through the left side to put the Indians up 3-2.

Lafayette answered back in the top of the fifth when a Rams batter bunted safely down the third baseline. The Indians then committed an error and put runners on first and second. Lafayette regained the lead on a two-run single, going up 4-3. Senior Josh Riddick came in relief of Senior Mason Wright to get out of the inning.

The Indians trailed until the bottom of the seventh. Lowe doubled down the leftfield line. Senior Zach Vann bunted safely to move Lowe to third. On the same play, Vann took off for second. Lowe was able to scamper home to tie the game at 4-4. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth. Vann led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Peck laid down a bunt and reached base safely on a throwing error by the Rams pitcher. Wright belted a two-out line drive through the right side of the infield to score Vann from third base to win the game. Peck earned his fifth win on the mound by pitching three scoreless innings.

The Indians will host Warhill High School (18-4) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, in a second round matchup.
