Petersburg—Southampton Academy’s girls softball team is one win away from a state title, advancing to the championship game by defeating Broadwater Academy 18-3 in Thursday’s semifinal game.

“We knocked the cover off the ball today,” said SA coach Scott Speight.

The Raiders offense was on full display once again Thursday, scoring 18 runs on 18 hits for the second consecutive game in the state playoffs.

“What was really great was that all of our players, including our two subs, scored at least one run,” Speight added. “Everybody crossed the plate today.”

The offense was led by Kate Wachsmann, who went 3 for 3 with a triple, scoring two runs and driving in an impressive six RBI’s. Brooke Mizelle had four hits in four plate appearances and scored four runs. August Ringor, who was 3 for 4, and Ashten Hinkle, 2 for 3, scored three runs apiece. Whitley Smith, who was 2 for 3 and scored two runs, hit two doubles on the day. Her second drove in two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, which gave the Raiders a 15-run lead and ended the game.

Mizelle pitched well again, facing 16 batters in four innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out three and walking none.

SA will play for the state title today, when they face off against conference foe Kenston Forest. Kenston Forest advanced to the finals by defeating Fuqua School 8-1 in Thursday’s other semifinal game.

“If we play a smart game, we can be right there with them,” said Speight.

SA has lost to Kenston Forest twice this year by the scores of 11-1 and 3-1. The championship game will be played at 1 p.m. at the Petersburg Sports Complex.
