COURTLAND—Southampton Academy’s Brooke Mizelle pitched well enough to win a tight game on Tuesday, but the Raiders brought enough offense to keep it from being close. As a result, SA made quick work of Portsmouth Christian in the quarterfinals of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state playoffs, cruising to an easy 18-0 win.

Mizelle, who faced 16 batters in a game called after five innings, allowed only one hit and struck out seven. On offense, the Raiders were paced by two seniors playing the final home game of their careers. Senior catcher Kate Wachsmann went 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored and one RBI, while center fielder Whitley Smith was 1 for 3, including a double and three runs scored.

Other offensive leaders showed that the SA softball program should be in good shape for the next few years as well. Mizelle, a sophomore, was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI’s. Freshman shortstop Ashten Hinkle went 2 for 4 and scored two runs, freshman second baseman Allie Holt was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and three RBI’s, and eighth grader Mason Pope was 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s.

The Raiders next game will be on Thursday at

1 p.m. when they take on Broadwater Academy in Petersburg in the state semifinals. Broadwater advanced by defeating Tidewater Academy 5-2 in another quarterfinal game.
