SA baseball advances to semifinals

COURTLAND—Coming into the game having won five straight, Southampton Academy’s baseball team continued its winning ways Tuesday, beating Walsingham Academy 7-0 in the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs. The Raiders, fresh off their Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament championship on Saturday, got six innings of one-hit, shutout ball from starting pitcher Tonee Hill. Walsingham’s pitchers also held the Raider’s offense scoreless through three, but Jacob Holland opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth when he drilled a solo home run over the right field fence. The Raiders added four more runs in the inning on two, t wo out, 2-run singles from Paul Parker and Nate Williams.

SA added two more insurance runs in the home half of the sixth, and Brynner Porter came on to pitch a scoreless seventh to close out the victory.

The Raiders will next face conference foe Fuqua School in the Division III state semifinals on Thursday at 1pm. The game will be played at Sheppard Stadium in Colonial Heights.
