SA softball triumphs in first round of tournament

COURTLAND—Southampton Academy’s girl’s softball team won its Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament opener on Tuesday, defeating visiting Tidewater Academy 8-1.

The Raiders we lead by sophomore pitcher Brooke Mizelle, who struck out eight batters in seven strong innings. Mizelle also went 1 for 3 at the plate with 2 runs batted in.

Other offensive leaders for SA included senior Kate Wachsmann, who went 2 for 3 with 3 runs batted in, freshman Ashten Hinkle who was 2 for 3 and drove in a run, and freshman Allie Holt, who scored 2 runs in addition to going 2 for 4 at the plate.

The Raiders will play in the conference semifinals on Friday, where they will face the winner of today’s matchup between Brunswick Academy and Richmond Christian. Friday’s game will be played at Kenston Forest in Blackstone. The starting time is yet to be determined.
