COURTLAND—The Southampton Indians Varsity Baseball team was able to win two district games this week to improve their record to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the district. On Tuesday, the Indians traveled to Emporia to take on the Greensville Eagles. The Indians started off hot in the first inning when Jake Pope scored Hayden Spalding on a triple, and Tanner Winters plated Pope with a single to left.

The Eagles were able to pull within one with a single down the third baseline in the second, and were able to tie the game at two with a solo homerun from Austin Wyatt. The score remained tied until the Indians were able to break it open in the sixth. Winters led off the inning with a double, and the Eagles committed four errors to allow Southampton to score seven runs.

The Indians’ Josh Riddick finished the last two innings of the game earning his first win of the season. Dillon Hasty struck out seven and Riddick struck out two. Greensville tallied six hits to Southampton’s eight.

The Indians faced the Park View Dragons of South Hill on Thursday. The Dragons were able to strike first, scoring one run off of two hits in the top half of the first. Southampton quickly answered back when Jake Pope tripled in Hayden Spalding for the second consecutive game. Winters was able to hit a groundball to shortstop to score Pope.

The Dragons went ahead a second time in the top of the second when they were able to score three runs on four hits and a base on balls. Again, the Indians answered back with two runs off of five hits and an error. The score remained tied until the sixth inning despite both teams having opportunities to score throughout.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Indians were able to scrape a run across as a Jack Bunn infield pop up fell to the grass.

Southampton’s Hunter Peck came away with the win to earn his third win of the season. Mason Wright was able to strike out five in five innings, and Peck was able to strike out two in two innings of work.

The Dragons tallied 12 hits and three errors and the Indians tallied 10 hits and 1 error.
