SA baseball team wins McLawhorn Tournament

LASKER, N.C.—Southampton Academy’s baseball team participated in the Sgt. Will McLawhorn Memorial Tournament at Northeast Academy in Lasker, N.C., April 3-5 and brought home the championship trophy.

The Raiders’ first game of the tournament was a win against Ridgecroft School 22-2. Jacob Holland was the winning pitcher. SA pounded out 15 hits with Jacob Holland, Matt Rose, and Toneé Hill collecting three hits apiece and Ethan Edwards and Triston Holland had two hits apiece. SA was able to take control very early in the game.

In the championship game, SA faced hosts Northeast Academy. The game was a pitching duel for three innings between Southampton Academy’s Hill and Northeast’s Ryan Williams.

In the fourth inning, Hill led off with a single.

Jacob Holland was then hit by a pitch with two on base. Ethan Edwards’ single drove in Hill from second. Batter Matt Rose’s double drove in two more runs. After four innings the score was 3-0.

In the sixth inning, singles by Jacob Holland, Ethan Edwards and a double by Sean Raulston helped the Raiders put three more runs on the board. Southampton Academy plated two more runs in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring at 8-0 and the championship.

Hill was the winning pitcher, giving up two hits, no runs, and 12 Ks. The Raiders also had a nice defensive effort from everyone for the tournament.
