Southampton Storm 14U wins Easter tournament

RICHMOND—The Southampton Storm 14U softball team triumphed when it competed against five other 14U teams in Softball Nation’s Easter Special on March 30 in Richmond.

Comprised of girls from Southampton County and the city of Suffolk, the team won its first game against the Richmond Diamonds, 12-1.

The second game was won against Tidewater Whitecaps, 16-4. Storm won 6-1 when it next played East Coast Diamonds.

For the championship game, Storm defeated the K.G. Her-icanes, 6-2, and earned the title of Softball Nation Easter Special 14U Champions.

Team members are: Brittany Cobb, Stranisha Darden, Makayla Dickens, Alyssa Funai, Miranda Joyner, Bryona Knight, Jordan Marks, Mallory Moore, Savannah Nipper, Kaitlyn Robertson, Morgan Stevens and Megan Vincent. Coaches are Ronnie Vincent, Strawn Darden, Michael Nipper and Brandie Hunt.

Southampton Storm 14U’s first tournament was on March 16-17, where the team earned a third-place finish. The next tournament, “Pick Your Pitch,” sponsored by Nation’s Fastpitch, will be April 20-21 in Elizabeth City, N.C.

The team will compete in a total of nine tournaments this spring and summer, and getting ready for its biggest tournament: the NSA World Series tournament in Williamsburg on July 22-27. From now through the first of July, fundraisers are being done to help the team pay for the entry fee.

The 14U team is just one of five in the Southampton Storm Fastpitch Organization.

In summer 2010, Southampton Storm Fastpitch held its first tryouts and fielded two teams, one in the 12U division and one in the 14U division. The second tryouts for the Storm organization were done in 2011, and yielded three teams, one each in the 12U, 14U and 16U divisions. The 2012 tryouts gave the Storm group five teams, which are competing in the 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U age divisions.
