PORTSMOUTH—The Isle of Wight Academy softball team churned out a 16-0 win in five innings Tuesday over Alliance Christian.

“It was a good overall game,” said IWA Coach Chris Hooper. “We are seeing good progress. The girls played very well.”

Lady Charger senior Shelby Jurewicz, the winning pitcher, gave up two hits while striking out three in the three innings she pitched. Senior Hailey Glover gave up no hits in the first two innings of the game.

“Our pitchers threw exactly where we needed them at this point in the season,” Hooper said.

Junior Dianne Davis went two-for-four at the plate with a four run grand slam in first inning and four RBI’s. Sophomore Bailey Key went two-for-four at the plate including a double. Eighth-grader Hayley Lane went two-for-two.

The Lady Chargers will

travel to the Bird Athletic Complex in Chester on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23 to compete in the Sports Plus Tournament. IWA, one

of only two private schools competing in the 17-team tournament, will play two games on Friday and two on Saturday.

“Our girls are ready. They are used to playing travel ball,” Hooper said. “It won’t affect them as much. They have the mindset needed for multiple games like we will see this weekend.”

The Lady Chargers played Portsmouth Christian Thursday, March 21, in Portsmouth. Results were not available at press time.
