FARMVILLE—Fuqua School handed Southampton Academy a 6-3 defeat for the Thursday match in Farmville.

In singles, the visiting Lady Raiders were led by No. 1 seed senior Barclay Gatten, winning 8-0, and No. 2 seed junior Olivia Fox, came back from a 0-2 deficit to win 8-2.

No. 3 seed sophomore Kirsten Wachsmann, who moved up two spots in the lineup this year, lost a closely contested battle with her opponent 2-8. Also moving up two spots this year, No. 4 seed Mina Johnson, a freshman, showed improvement from last year before losing to a foreign exchange student from Holland 3-8, said SA Coach Joann Gatten.

Making their high school tennis debuts were No., 5 seed Rachel White and No. 6 seed Selena Johnson. The coach said that White, a junior, and Johnson, a 7th-grader, both played competitive matches before falling 3-8 and 3-8 respectively.

“Also making her high school tennis debut was freshman, Elena Litman, who showed promise for the future in her first match before falling 1-8,” said Coach Gatten.

In doubles, Gatten and Fox teamed up for a quick win at No. 1, 8-1. Wachsmann and M. Johnson played well at No. 2 before falling to their opponents 3-8. White and S. Johnson looked impressive in their inaugural high school doubles match. They tied the score at 5-5 before eventually losing 5-8, the coach said.

“The Lady Raiders put forth a great effort on the trip to Farmville and are determined to avenge the loss to Fuqua at home later in the year,” said Coach Gatten.

That game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 9.
