EXMORE—The Tidewater Academy boys lost 73-70 to Broadwater Academy after four overtimes and a rain delay in the opening round of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III State Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.

Host Broadwater was ranked No. 6 and Tidewater was 11th in the standings.

“I’m extremely proud of my kids,” said TA Coach Walter Westbrook. “We played the last 2½ overtimes with five players. I only play seven kids.”

Warriors Marqual Saunders and Elante Drew fouled out.

“We got behind in the third and fourth overtime, and battled back,” Westbrook said.

The game lasted more than 3½ hours. Ten minutes into the match, a leaky roof caused officials to stop the game for 50 minutes. The overtimes stretched the normal 32 minutes of play time into 48 minutes.

Both teams were tied 40-40 at the end of regulation play.

Leading scorer for TA was Hunter Haywood with 20 points. Drew added 14 and Saunders 13.

The Warriors finished the season 18-10.
