NEWPORT NEWS—The Isle of Wight boys’ basketball team finished 7th in state polls despite a 50-27 loss to Atlantic Shores Christian in the semifinal round of the Metro Athletic Conference Tournament.

“We played a very talented shores team,” said IWA Coach Benjamin Vaughn. “They played extremely well and held our top scorer Nathan Sivertson to only 3 points.”

Leading for IWA were seniors Hunter Triplett and Rainer Marfio with six points apiece and senior Alex Fronfelter added 5.

The Chargers will host No. 10 seeded Greenbrier Christian at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for the first round of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III State Tournament. The winner of that contest will travel to play No. 2 Amelia Academy Wednesday.

“Greenbrier played in a tough TCIS conference,” Vaughn said. “In that conference there are a lot of Division I and II teams that are ranked rather high in the state polls.”

“They have two talented guards that we will have to contain tomorrow night,” he added.
