IWA boys take on Atlantic Shores tonight

NEWPORT NEWS—With 20 seconds left, a two-point lay-up by senior Rainer Marfio allowed the Isle of Wight Academy boys’ to defeat StoneBridge Christian 55-54 in the quarterfinals of the Metro Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday.

IWA will play No. 1 seeded Atlantic Shores at 6 tonight, Feb. 22, in the semifinal round at Denbigh Baptist. IWA during the regular season lost 83-61 to Atlantic Shores on Jan. 7 and won 60-58 on Jan. 29.

The Chargers came into the tournament as the No. 4 seed with a 19-7 record. StoneBridge came in as the No. 5 seed with a 15-16 record.

The win marks a school record. It’s the fifth-consecutive season IWA has won 20 games or more.

The win also broke a season-long loss record against StoneBridge. The Chargers lost to Stonebridge 58-54 on Dec. 3 and 53-48 on Feb. 11.

IWA began the fourth quarter trailing 43-39 and took the lead with 5:33 left when sophomore Casey Williams made two foul shots.

StoneBridge claimed a 54-53 advantage with 33 seconds left in the game.

Senior Nathan Sivertson led the Chargers with 26 points; Marfio added 10.
