Tidewater takes Brunswick twice

WAKEFIELD—The Tidewater Academy boys’ basketball team defeated Virginia Commonwealth Conference opponent Brunswick Academy 46-40 on Saturday.

“Brunswick came ready to play,” said TA Coach Walter Westbrook. “They played their hearts out that night. They deserved to win the game.

Trailing 27-24 at the end of the third quarter, the Warriors outscored Brunswick 22-13 in the final quarter, going 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.

“We fought hard to get the lead in the fourth quarter,” Westbrook said.

Leading for the winners were senior Hunter Haywood who scored 18; senior Marquel Saunders added 12.

The Warriors improved to 8-2 in VCC and 15-6 overall.

In action from Friday, the Warriors defeated Brunswick 65-28 in Lawrenceville.

Haywood netted 16 points, junior Elante Drew added 14 and Saunders added 13.

“We played as good as we have all season during that game,” Westbrook said.

TA will host Amelia Academy at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5.

“They are number one in the state,” Westbrook said Monday. “We will have our hands full.”
