COURTLAND—The Southampton Academy girls’ basketball team had three players score in double digits during a non-conference 51-14 win Alliance Christian Friday.
Leaders for the winners were junior Morgan Pope and senior Barclay Gatten with 14 points apiece while junior Anna Carr added 13.
“The girls really played well,” said SA Coach Chris Pope. “We have gone back to man-to-man and the girls have responded well.”
The Lady Raiders improved to 7-10 overall and remain 3-7 in Virginia Commonwealth Conference.
In action from Wednesday, SA defeated VCC opponent Fuqua School 36-30 at home.
Sophomore Sarah Best led the Lady Raiders netting 21 points and went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. Morgan Pope added 7 points, scoring a 3-pointer in 4th.
“That three was big,” Chris Pope said. “It helped us catch back after we were down by two in a very tight game. And once (Fuqua) started fouling, Sarah’s free throws are what kept us ahead.”
The Lady Raiders will play at 7:30 p.m. today, Feb. 4, at home.
