NORFOLK—Tidewater Academy basketball team fell 42-41 to Division 1 opponent Norfolk Academy on Tuesday.
“We more than held our own against a school that has over 1,200 students,” said TA Coach Walter Westbrook. “I am real proud of what we did. It was a learning experience for the kids.”
The Warriors held the lead the entire game until Norfolk hit a 3-pointer with under a minute to go, putting Norfolk up 41-39. Norfolk then made one of two free throws to take a 42-39 lead.
With 17 seconds left in the game, the Warriors scored a lay-up to bring the score to within one point, but with no timeouts left, Norfolk let the clock run out.
Leaders for the Warriors were sophomore Payton Holdsworth with 10 points; senior Hunter Haywood added 9 points.
“Everyone really played really well last night,” Westbrook said. “All six that played last night scored.”
The Warriors, who are 4-2, were without point guard senior Marqual Saunders who was out with the flu.
The Warriors will take on non-conference Windsor at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, on the road.
