AHOSKIE, N.C.—The Southampton Academy girls’ basketball team at 7 p.m. today, Nov. 30, will take on Ocracoke High School for the Lt. Nick Brantley Tournament championship game.

The boys’ team will follow at 8, also going for the tournament title against Ocracoke. Both games will be held at Ridgecroft School in Ahoskie, N.C.

The Lady Warriors advanced to the championship game with a 28-27 overtime win over Bethel Assembly Christian Academy Tuesday.

They were led by senior Barclay Gatten with 10 points and 12 rebounds; sophomore Sarah Best added 8 points.

“I was pleased with how well we played defensively,” said Coach Chris Pope. “We did not play as well offensively.”

In tournament action from Monday, the Lady Raiders defeated Northeast Academy 42-14 in their season opener.

“We played and shot well,” Pope said. “You could tell we hadn’t played or scrimmaged.”

Gatten led all scorers with 12 points; Best had 11 points; junior Morgan Pope added nine points and eighth-grader Mason Pope had 8.

“We had a few bright spots, but we saw areas that we need to work on such as we had more turnovers than I like,” Pope said.

Gatten led the team in rebounds with 10, while Mason pulled down 8.

The boys advanced to the finals after defeating Ridgecroft Tuesday 51-45.

“It’s like any early season game,” said SA Coach Jim Tribbett. “It had highs and lows. We are just trying to develop the program, and get the kids to adapt to the new system.”

Down 24-13 at the half, the Raiders extended to an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter after junior Cameron Hines hit back-to-back 3-pointers.

“His 3-pointers were big, they gave us a nice cushion,” Tribbett said.

The Raiders, who improved to 2-0 on the season, were led by sophomore Matt Rose with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Junior Tonee Hill added 15 points and 5 rebounds.
