LYNCHBURG—Isle of Wight Academy on Saturday lost a 28-20 heartbreaker to Virginia Episcopal in the final minutes the semi-final round of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III State championship playoffs.

The Chargers ended their season at 7-3 while the Bishops improved to 8-2.

The Chargers came into the game as the No. 4 seed after being the Virginia Commonwealth Conference runner-ups. The Bishops came into the game as the No.1 seed after winning the Old Dominion Football Conference.

Leaders for the Chargers were junior quarterback Brandon Saxby, who went 7-for-14 for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Zeb Warnick had seven carries for 78 yards and one touchdown. Senior Matt Brummett had 10 carries for 53 yards.

The Chargers were first on the scoreboard when Saxby hit Gage Rogers for a 51-yard pass with about six minutes left in the first quarter. The extra point by sophomore kicker Josh Weihe was good, making the score 7-0.

With a minute left to play in the quarter, VES’s Ronnie Stringfield scored from two yards out. The point after was good making the score 7-7.

The Chargers quickly answered when Warnick found the end zone on a 60-yard run with under a minute to play in the first quarter. The extra point was no good, making the score 13-7.

The Bishops’ Tom Creasy with about nine minutes left in the third quarter found the end zone from 13 yards out. The extra point was no good, making the score 13-13.

With less than five minutes to go in the fourth quarter Saxby hit a 75-yard pass to senior Alex Fronfelter, giving the Chargers their final lead of the game. The extra point by sophomore kicker Josh Weihe was good, making the score 20-13.

The Bishops took the lead for good with three minutes left in the game on a two-point conversion after Stringfield entered the end zone from 3 yards out making the score 21-20.

With less than two minutes remaining in the game Stringfield broke a 67-yard run for the Bishops. The point after was good making the score 28-20.
