COURTLAND—No. 3 Grafton upset the top-ranked Southampton High School volleyball team Monday 0-3, eliminating the Lady Indians’ hopes for the state tournament and ending their season.

Set scores were 20-25, 14-25, 10-25.

Southampton earned a No. 1 seed for the Group AA Region I tournament after winning the Southside District and finished the season 21-3 overall.

“They are just a great group of girls and that’s what you want, I had fun coaching,” said SHS Coach Chad Brock. “No matter what your record is that’s what makes it worth coaching those girls right there.”

Top players for the Lady Indians were junior Madeleine Kahle with 5 kills and 3 blocks. Junior Grayson Drake had 2 kills, 2 blocks and an assist, and junior Samantha Billups added 4 assists

“I thought after that first set we were going to be able to hang in there for a while,” Brock said. “They are a fast offense and once they got heated up it was short sets like they are used to seeing.”
