TA volleyball advances to state tourney

BLACKSTONE—Tidewater Academy’s volleyball team won its conference tournament Saturday and has advanced to the state tournament.

The Lady Warriors earned a No. 7 seed for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association State Tournament. TA at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, will play No. 2 seed Hampton Christian at Hampton Christian. Hampton Christian was the Metro Conference regular season champions.

“It’s going to be a difficult task,” said TA Coach Jimmy Dunn. “We may be the underdogs; we are looking forward to the challenge.”

The Lady Warriors are 15-1 in the VCC and 21-3 overall.

Tidewater defeated Richmond Christian 3-1 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship game. Set scores were 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 25-22.

“We came out and played really strong,” Dunn said. “Richmond Christian was a really good team.”

Top players for the winners were senior Cary Beahm with 12 kills and 22 digs. Senior Falon Williams added 8 kills and 19 digs and senior Tyler Stephenson had 4 aces and 13 assists.

“The senior leadership stepped up and the girls pulled it together and we won the match,” Dunn said.
